Turkeys are Honored Guests at Unique Thanksgiving Celebration
Distinctive event reflects growing trend toward placing turkeys at the center of our attention, rather than at the center of our plates
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – November 18, 2011 – Imagine Norman Rockwell’s classic Thanksgiving painting of the family gathered around the table for their turkey dinner and turn it on its ear. That’s Farm Sanctuary’s Celebration FOR the Turkeys, taking place this Sunday, November 20 at their new Southern California shelter in Acton (just an hour from Hollywood). Although this is the first year the distinctive celebration where turkeys are the honored guests will take place at their new location, the event’s highlight, the famous Feeding of the Turkeys Ceremony, has become such a time-honored tradition, it practically warrants its own Rockwell painting. How famous is it? By popular demand, the New York shelter’s Ceremony is being live streamed for the first-time ever on Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern (11:30 a.m. Pacific) on farmsanctuary.org.
What can attendees of this free and open to the public event expect? Turkeys feasting on silver platters piled high with THEIR favorite treats (think stuffed squash, cranberries and pumpkin pie), the opportunity to get to know these intelligent and social birds, and plenty of bonding time with the sanctuary’s other rescued farm animal friends, including cows, pigs, sheep, goats and chickens.
Need another reason to spend a day relaxing in the company of sweet animals at Farm Sanctuary’s new Southern California outpost? How about 25? Baby turkeys, that is, dumped last month on the shelter’s doorstep. Rumor has it they will be spending their first Celebration at the children’s table.
Any further convincing that this is the can’t-miss Thanksgiving event of the year will be left to proven bird lover Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, who gave the party his endorsement in a humorous home video.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to “adopt” a turkey through the organization’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project, for which Ellen DeGeneres is serving as this year’s spokesperson. For a one-time donation of just $30, adopters will receive a special Adopt-A-Turkey certificate complete with color photo of a rescued turkey who resides at one of Farm Sanctuary’s shelters and fun details about their adopted turkey.
Farm Sanctuary’s Celebration FOR the Turkeys is this Sunday November 20, from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m., at their Acton shelter, located at 5200 Escondido Canyon Road. The Feeding of the Turkeys Ceremony starts at 3 p.m.
