Jessica Chastain and Woody Harrelson are both actors with multiple awards for their brilliant work on the screen, and they both trust their vegan diets to keep their skin camera-ready, their figures svelte, and their consciences clear.
Jessica, who stole the show in The Help, has been vegetarian for 15 years and vegan for five. “I don’t want to torture anything,” she says. “It’s about trying to live a life where I’m not contributing to the cruelty in the world. While I am on this planet, I want everyone I meet to know that I am grateful they are here.”
Woody, known for his recent role as Haymitch in the blockbuster hit The Hunger Games, has been vegan for nearly three decades. He had his “aha” moment when he was trying to make it as an actor in New York: “I was on a bus and some girl sees me blowing my nose, I had acne all over my face, which I’d had for years and years. And she’s like: ‘Hey, you’re lactose intolerant. If you quit dairy, all these symptoms you got will be gone in three days.’ I was like 24. And I was like, No way. But three days later: gone.”
Since the average vegetarian saves about 100 animals’ lives every year, Jessica and Woody’s combined 45 years of cruelty-free eating have saved at least 4,500 animals from being neglected, genetically manipulated, put on drug regimens that cause chronic pain, and killed in gruesome and violent ways. Jessica and Woody also greatly decreased their personal carbon footprints since a meat-eating diet is responsible for more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the transportation industries in the world combined. When you consider the meat industry’s impact on the environment and the intense cruelty inflicted upon animals raised and slaughtered for food, it’s easy to see why Jessica and Woody have chosen a healthful vegan diet!
