Update: As UniverSoul Circus prepares to force Nosey to perform this week in Tallahassee, Florida, actor Cheryl Hines has written an urgent letter to the manager of the North Florida Fairgrounds imploring him to cancel the ailing elephant’s appearances. Local activists have also planned to demonstrate at the fairgrounds in Nosey’s behalf.
UniverSoul Circus is teaming up with infamous exhibitor Hugo “Tommy” Liebel and featuring the suffering elephant Nosey in its performances in Florida this month, despite abundant indisputable evidence of Nosey’s decades-long neglect at the hands of Liebel. Please join PETA in urging UniverSoul CEO Cedric Walker and North Florida Fairgrounds Manager Mark Harvey to cancel Nosey’s appearances in UniverSoul’s upcoming Tallahassee shows immediately.
Liebel has a long history of violating the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), and despite previously paying nearly $3,000 to settle violations of this federal law, Liebel currently faces almost three dozen formal charges for violations of the AWA, most of them related to Nosey. These violations include repeatedly chaining Nosey so tightly that she could barely move, repeatedly denying her necessary veterinary care, and allowing dangerous, unsupervised public contact with her. Liebel is set to face these charges at a hearing in Tampa next month. Despite the charges—and two decades of citations for failing to properly treat Nosey’s painful skin condition—Liebel continues to fail to give this animal the care that she needs: According to a veterinarian with more than 30 years of experience caring for and treating elephants, recent photographs of Nosey reveal that her condition continues to deteriorate and that she is in pain and suffering as a result.
Liebel’s appalling record of abuse and neglect has not escaped the multiple venues that have canceled arrangements with the circus. After learning from PETA that Liebel had been charged with such numerous and serious violations of federal law, the circus’s planned appearances at four armories were canceled. Washington and Lee University also canceled a planned appearance by Liebel after learning about the charges. Please urge Walker and Harvey to join these compassionate venues and make the prudent decision not to affiliate themselves with Liebel’s cruelty to animals and extensive federal law violations.
Please call Mr. Walker and Mr. Harvey and follow up with a polite note.
