On Wednesday morning, May 28th, as our crews were already busily loading the remaining tigers and other animals from the failed facility in upstate New York, one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time, and one of my personal heroes, Dr. Maya Angelou, passed away peacefully in her sleep.
As I sit here now, looking back on the past three days of the challenges, triumphs, and just down right hard work involved in removing all the animals from the property, I can’t help but think about the words of a woman who have inspired me time and again:
“Nothing will work unless you do.”

Determination, unyielding patience, and cross-organizational cooperation lead to the successful confiscation and placement of all exotic animals living at JNK Call of the Wild Sanctuary. After assisting the local humane society with the additional seizure of all the domestic animal residents, IFAW’s team headed to the Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Indiana, where 6 of the 11 tigers will now find forever care.
In the video above, the author speaks with WBUR’s program “The Animalist” about the logistics of the operation.
At this point, all the wild animals have arrived safely at their new sanctuaries and are doing well. I still have more to tell you about this dramatic rescue, so please keep your eyes out for more information and a video in the coming week.
Dr. Maya Angelou said, “When you do nothing you feel overwhelmed and powerless. But when you get involved you feel the sense of hope and accomplishment that comes from knowing you are working to make things better.”
Thank you for getting involved and enabling us to make a difference for these animals.
