Do you have an interest in animal protection issues and legal research?

Our Companion Animals department works to prevent pet homelessness and strengthen communities through outreach, training, policy and legislation.

We have an opportunity for a policy intern (click to view expanded position description) to learn about the Companion Animals department and gain practical experience and knowledge through hands on advocacy about policy and legislation. This is a great opportunity, especially if you are pursuing a degree in political science or public policy, or have experience in a legal or legislative field.

Policy interns gain a deeper understanding of companion animal issues and how they intersect with the issues of public health and safety, animal shelters, pet overpopulation, the broader pet industry and animal protection legislation. Interns will also learn what it takes to run successful state and local campaigns.

Some responsibilities include:

  • Perform daily legislative tracking
  • Perform policy research and analysis pertaining to local and state legislation affecting companion animals and compile results into internal reports
  • Review news feeds on relevant companion animal policy issues
  • Provide written reports on progression of projects to supervisor
  • Attend weekly Companion Animals department meetings, weekly policy meetings, educational presentations, and other meetings as scheduled
  • Under guidance of staff, spearhead one independent project that will culminate in a presentation to our department. Project could be to create a piece of state legislation and relevant campaign materials.

  • Must have completed some college-level coursework
  • Basic knowledge of local and state policy
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong research and critical thinking skills
  • Attentive to detail with a commitment to accuracy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

Intern is expected to commit to 16-24 hours per week for 10-12 weeks; a reduced schedule would be considered.

This internship is unpaid; however, course credit can be arranged.

Intern must pass a criminal background check and sign a waiver and release of liability. The position is located in our Gaithersburg, Md., office.
