The Humane Society of the United States recently became aware of a phishing e-mail scam that went to some PayPal users on July 30th and again on August 3rd. It appeared to be an attempt to gain the PayPal credentials of users by telling them that a donation had been made to the HSUS from the users’ PayPal accounts. These e-mails were not sent out by the HSUS, and there is no evidence that it targeted our supporters specifically.
We have filed a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and have also been in touch with PayPal, which is investigating this matter. Please do not click on any links in the email and forward it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
For individuals who already clicked on the links, and possibly entered their PayPal credentials, we encourage them to log into their PayPal accounts and change their passwords, and contact PayPal support for assistance.
Donors to the Humane Society of the United States may contact our Donor Care team with additional questions regarding this at 1-800-805-7471
