The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Director, Development for its South Florida Wildlife Center (SFWC). This position is responsible for directing all aspects of the on-line and off-line fund development program of SFWC, including capital campaign, major donor solicitation and cultivation, corporate support, annual and planned gifts, grant research/application, special events, direct marketing, website and all other fundraising initiatives.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Establishing and managing development and donor stewardship systems, including recognition, acknowledgements, record keeping and budgeting;
  • Supporting donor research, identification, and gift solicitation for capital campaign;
  • Assuring that the database management system supports fundraising activities;
  • Being knowledgeable about South Florida Wildlife issues and HSUS programs and services and serve as an effective speaker and presenter about the organization;
  • Creating annually a detailed, comprehensive development plan utilizing a variety of fundraising methods that provides a roadmap to meet or exceed the annual fundraising goals;
  • Creating an annual calendar that integrates fundraising with all SFWC activities;
  • Designing and evaluating each aspect of the fundraising program for cost effectiveness of methods, program growth and effectiveness of the process;
  • Setting and achieving realistic development plans and goals for major and planned gifts, special events, foundation and corporate support, and other appropriate income;
  • Setting goals and metrics and developing strategies for recruiting new high net worth individuals;
  • Proactively guiding efforts to identify new prospects to grow and further diversity the organization’s major donor base;
  • Providing leadership to management staff and support to Executive Director in order to involve and engage the entire team and facilitate and achieve fundraising success;
  • Serving as key strategist and primary solicitor for all appropriate fundraising solicitations as well as a coach and supporter for those solicitations where others are the most appropriate primary solicitor.
  • Working with Planned Giving Department to insure coordinated integration of donor cultivation;
  • Identifying, cultivating, directing and supporting leadership volunteers, including development and special events fundraising committees as well as capital campaign ad-hoc committees and a formal Advisory Board associated with the SFWC governance boar;
  • Supervising Development Specialist as well as fundraising volunteers;
  • Providing leadership development and career development to the development staff.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and specialized training in fundraising practices. Continuing education in the field of fundraising and development with emphasis on development research methods, database management and fundraising practices highly desirable;
  • Minimum of nine years of progressively responsible development experience with accountability for strategic development planning and implementation of creative resource development strategies. Management of a portfolio(s) exceeding $1 million highly-desired;
  • Minimum six years of management experience;
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification strongly preferred;
  • Proven track record of successfully closing major gifts and stewarding donors. Capital campaign experience highly desirable;
  • Track record of providing strategic direction and operational management of creative fundraising initiatives, resulting in significant philanthropic revenue growth and an expanded constituency base;
  • Knowledge of, and ideally, high-level experience with, non-profit business operations, including effective budget development and the management processes required;
  • Knowledge of both on-line and off-line fundraising best practices;
  • Proficient with databases, preferably ROI, or other similar CRM systems, and Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Strong development writing skills, strong presentation and interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen, empathize and influence;
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to SFWC, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations;
  • The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Demonstrated strategic and critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills, including ability to listen, empathize and influence;
  • Well-organized, ability to manage competing priorities and execute plans, attention to detail;
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
