When someone refers to “man’s best friend”, they’re usually talking about dogs. That’s no surprise, really, since dogs are loyal and sensitive animals.

But have you ever thought that the term could be just as applicable to pigs?

Pigs are actually smarter than any other domesticated animal – in fact, animal experts consider them more trainable than dogs and cats. They are sociable and like to cuddle and snuggle up with one another, nose to nose, as they sleep.

In PETA Germany’s new video, “Best Friend”, viewers are invited to compare the way they treat their animal companions to the ways in which animals used for food are treated. They’re urged to recognise that all animals deserve respect, regardless of what they look like.

The video is a collaboration with the renowned Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. The shockingly realistic “pig”, named Lucky, was created by animation company Mackevision, a world leader in computer-generated imagery.

Even though pigs are just as capable of suffering as dogs are, millions of them are killed every year. On Australian factory farms, they’re typically kept in cramped, barren sheds, where they’re denied the chance to do anything that comes naturally to them, such as playing, exploring their surroundings, foraging for food, and building nests for their offspring.

Frustration and the stress of extreme confinement can drive them to engage in aggressive behaviour such as tail-biting, so farmers routinely cut off their tails and clip or grind down their sensitive teeth, often without painkillers.

In addition to the cruelty and needless suffering to which animals are subjected at the hands of the meat industry, there are many other reasons to stop eating them. Choosing only plant-based foods benefits not only animals but also the planet and our own health – so there’s no need to keep supporting destructive animal agriculture.

Please, leave animals off your plate.
