Tell Iditarod Sponsors to Cancel Support of Cruel Race!

The Iditarod is a long, grueling race that has become synonymous with animal abuse, causing hundreds of injuries and deaths. Dogs’ paws become bruised and bloodied and are cut by the ice. Many dogs incur stress fractures or become sick with intestinal viruses. Dogs often die in the 1,150-plus-mile race from hypothermia, pneumonia, gastric ulcers, accidents, beatings, and “sled dog myopathy”—literally being run to death. Twenty dogs used in the Iditarod have died since 2005. On average, more than half the dogs who start the race don’t make it across the finish line, and 81 percent of those who do finish have lung damage, according to a report published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Compassionate companies have pulled their sponsorship of this cruel event, including Nestle, Rite Aid, Panasonic, Safeway, Maxwell House, True Value Hardware, BP Amoco, Sherwin-Williams, Upjohn, Tropicana, Pizza Hut, Costco, and Pfizer Pharmacia—and, just this week, the Transportation Security Administration.

With the Iditarod starting on March 5, we need your help to urge the remaining sponsors to end their support of this cruel event.

Please take a moment to send an e-mail to the executives of the companies that are still sponsoring the Iditarod. (You only need to submit the form once to contact all the executives.) Ask them to cancel their sponsorship of this event, which results in injured, and often dead, dogs.

    Dear [Decision Maker],

I was shocked to learn that your company is sponsoring the Iditarod. This cruel race often leads to injury and death for the dogs who are forced to run the 1,150-plus miles. Their paws become bruised and bloodied and are cut by the ice, and many incur stress fractures or become sick with intestinal viruses. The dogs often die of hypothermia, pneumonia, gastric ulcers, and “sled dog myopathy”–literally being run to death. Twenty dogs have died since 2005, including Kate, a 3-year-old female who was allegedly beaten and kicked by her guardian because she sat down and refused to get up; Thong, a 3-year-old male who apparently died of acute pneumonia; and Snickers, a 6-year-old female who died from an acute hemorrhage caused by a gastric ulcer.

Please follow the lead of compassionate companies that have pulled their sponsorship of the event, including Nestle, Rite Aid, Panasonic, Safeway, Maxwell House, True Value Hardware, BP Amoco, Sherwin-Williams, Upjohn, Tropicana, Pizza Hut, Costco, and Pfizer Pharmacia–and, just this week, the Transportation Security Administration. I look forward to hearing that you will not support this cruel event. Thank you.

    Sincerely,
    [Your Name]

    1. What an honor it is to sponsor animal cruelty, seriously???? What are these companies thinking, evidently they are not thinking!

ALL these sled dog races or tours need to be shut down!

The lowest of cowards prey on defenseless animals! Anyone involved in this is a coward.
