The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for throwing a dog to his death in the Navesink River in Fair Haven, N.J. The Monmouth County SPCA is also offering a $1,000 reward, raising the total reward offered to $3,500.

The Case: The Monmouth County SPCA gives the following account: On Tuesday, a Fair Haven resident found a dead dachshund inside a carrier on the Navesink River and called the Monmouth County SPCA. The dog was taken to Garden State Veterinary Hospital for a necropsy; investigators believe the 5-year-old, reddish-brown, male dog was alive when the carrier holding him was thrown into the water.

Animal Cruelty: Getting the serious attention of law enforcement, prosecutors and the community in cases involving allegations of cruelty to animals is an essential step in protecting the community. The connection between animal cruelty and human violence is well documented. Studies show a correlation between animal cruelty and all manner of other crimes, from narcotics and firearms violations to battery and sexual assault.

“Anyone who could throw a defenseless dog into a river to face certain death can be dangerous to people, too,” said Kathleen Schatzmann, The HSUS’ New Jersey state director. “We are hopeful that this reward will bring forward anyone with information about this case.”

The Investigators: Monmouth County SPCA Chief Victor “Buddy” Amato is investigating. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call 732-312-7153.

Resources: The HSUS Animal Cruelty Campaign raises public awareness and educates communities about the connection between animal cruelty and human violence while providing a variety of resources to law enforcement agencies, social work professionals, educators, legislators and families. The HSUS offers rewards in animal cruelty cases across the country and works to strengthen laws against animal cruelty.
